Are Legal Aid Lawyers Worth It?
There are a lot of people out there who will make snide remarks and crack jokes at the thought of having to hire legal aid lawyers. The thing is though, there have been many free lawyers that have won cases against high priced lawyers. You don’t always get what you pay for, but you do want to make sure that you are reviewing your lawyer’s potential for winning.
If you are in a position where you are unable to afford an attorney, then legal aid might be the best way to go. If that is all that you can afford, then do not let others talk you out of it. Having a lawyer by your side is much better than trying to defend your case on your own in court. Remember, the legal aid attorney spent time in law school that you did not. And while the legal aid attorney may not have all of the hours of court experience that a high priced lawyer that has been in the field for twenty years, but the legal aid attorney certainly has much more experience in the courtroom than you do.
Of course, this does not mean that you have to settle with just any lawyer that you are referred to. If at any time you feel as though the lawyer appointed to you is not doing their job to the best of their ability or you are not getting the quality of service that you would expect from a lawyer, you can request another lawyer. Even though you are not paying two hundred dollars an hour, you have the right to proper representation.
As you can see, there is a lot that you are going to want to think about. The sooner you start the process of looking for the best lawyer for your needs the better. This way, you will have plenty of time to discuss your options, your case, and the best plan of action. Also, you will have time to discover whether or not this is the best attorney for your needs and to change attorneys if that is what you feel is going to be in your best interest.
So, the sooner you get started on your search for the best lawyer, even if that lawyer comes from the legal aid department, it will be well worth it. Remember, when it comes to being a good lawyer, they either “have it” or they don’t. The size of their paycheck means nothing when it comes to how well they will be able to perform their job.
